Raphael Sanzio
(1483–1520)
   Artist.
   Raphael was born in Urbino, Italy. He studied first with Perugino and later with leonardo da vinci and michelangelo in Florence. In 1508 he moved to Rome at the invitation of Pope Julius II. There he painted a series of pictures for the Vatican. Then in 1514, Pope Leo X appointed him chief architect of St Peter’s. Among his many paintings are a variety of biblical and religious scenes, as well as the famous School of Athens. His Madonnas are particularly admired.
